Iconic Obsessions: Winning
$50,000
In Paul Newman's painting I chose a background consisting of three symbols of his life. The movie camera, race cars and salad dressing bottles.
As a young man the fluke of war probably saved his life on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific theater. His pilot was sick and they were unable to fly a mission that no one returned from. Following WWII, Paul Newman began his acting career on Broadway in the mid 50's and made the transition to movies soon after. Some of my favorites are represented in this painting. He originally met Joanne Woodward on Broadway but later reconnected durning their movie "Long Hot Summer" and so began one of Hollywood's most lasting romance's.
His many awards and accomplishments in acting and racing have proven his ability to win many times over. While still competitive in racing in his later years, Newman's race car # represented his age. One of his last races he had car #82 and finished 4th at the Glen Nationals. His most lasting reward is felt by children around the world that attend one of his "Hole in the Wall Gang" camps every year.
I was lucky to have met Paul Newman and even more fortunate to have some lively dinner conversation with him. This portrait is very personal and includes names of family and even favorite pets. His character and his desire to help those in need is without question, his devilish smile and raised eyebrow remind me of a young man seeking his next adventure.
